Challenges
Designing Complex User Flows: Creating intuitive user journeys for advanced features like real-time bus tracking, dynamic route planning, and mobile ticketing—while keeping the interface clean and easy to navigate.
Designing for Diverse User Groups: Building an inclusive design that works seamlessly for a wide range of users—from tech-savvy young professionals to first-time users unfamiliar with digital transit tools.
Designing for Scale: Ensuring the design system could grow with the app—accommodating new features, increased user activity, and multi-city expansion without sacrificing clarity or usability.
My Approach
Discovery Phase
Market Research: Conducted deep research on public transport usage patterns in West African cities. Benchmarked existing solutions, mapped user pain points, and studied interface conventions in mobility apps.
User Persona Development: Developed detailed personas and user journey maps to visualize goals, frustrations, and expectations at each step—from planning a trip to boarding the bus.
UI/UX Design
Information Architecture: Structured the app to reduce friction and cognitive load. Prioritized key actions like searching a route, checking live bus locations, and viewing estimated arrival times.
Wireframing & Prototyping: Created low- to high-fidelity wireframes to explore layout options and interaction models. Built clickable prototypes for internal testing and stakeholder reviews.
Visual Design: Crafted a modern and approachable visual identity:
A calming color palette inspired by cityscapes
Bold, legible typography for readability on the go
Iconography that simplifies complex actions like ticket validation or bus location
Accessibility & Inclusivity: Applied contrast and size standards to ensure accessibility for users in varied lighting conditions or with visual impairments. Designed interfaces that work well with one-handed use and on lower-end devices.
Testing and Iteration
User Testing: Conducted moderated usability tests with diverse participants, collecting both qualitative and behavioral data to improve clarity, flow, and feature discoverability.
Performance Optimization: Iterated on feedback, simplifying overcomplicated interactions, improving map usability, and optimizing UI responsiveness for real-time updates.
Results
UrbanBus launched with a high adoption rate and strong user satisfaction. The clear and intuitive design played a key role in onboarding new users quickly and reducing support requests. The app’s visual clarity and seamless navigation contributed to high daily engagement and strong reviews post-launch.
Future Plans
Design Evolution: Continuously evolve the design system to support new mobility services and emerging user needs—while maintaining consistency and ease of use.
Localization & Personalization: Introduce location-aware design elements and personalized content to enhance contextual relevance and user experience at scale.
Conclusion
UrbanBus reflects my ability to translate complex transit systems into elegant, human-centered digital experiences. Through research-driven design and thoughtful UI execution, I created a product that makes city travel more accessible, reliable, and enjoyable.
